Send/Receive does not connect until Preferences opened

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Email Client: pop When Entourage goes into send/receive mode, the status shows as "connecting to mail.comcast.net" and will remain there indefinitely unless I open Preferences from the menu bar, at which time it will login and proceed to check my email. This has only happened in the last few days. I don't believe I have made any knowing changes to my computer in that time. Thank you for any help you can provide.
