send/receive error

My Outlook constantly tries to send messages when i'm not asking it to, and
comes up with a send/receive error because it cant connect to the server.
There are no messages in the outbox, and its doing it more frequently than
the automatic settings for send/receive . i'm worried its slowing my system
down. The details are described below. can anyone help?

1 I receive mesages from one email provider (who provide my email address,
so I dont want to change it), but dont send messages thro it (it can only
connect to the "outgoing" server thro a dialup connection, and I abandoned
that long ago)

2 I send outgoing messages thro another provider accout (Google mail, which
is free, and integrates with oulook)

3 Outlook aloows you to set the account details so it checks for incoming
post from one account but not send mail from it. It also allows you to set
the account you send from. I've done that.

4 If i do a manual "send/recieve" there is no hitch - outlook quickly checks
the account for incoming mail, and for any mail to be sent. There is no
error message. If I write a message and send it, there's no problem - it
sends it thro the correct mail account.

5 So what's going on that it's repeatedly trying (and of course failing) to
send an outgoing message through the server that it cant connect to? As I
say, there's no messages in the outbox. What's telling it to connect to that
outgoing post server?

Go to Google's Help page under Settings for setting up Outlook with Google
and follow the special instructions. If you "receive mail" from your
provider, you are using their servers. You don't say what provider, but you
are connecting to their servers by something other than dialup. Make sure
"Never dial a connection" is selected in Connections in Internet Options.
Check all your Connections settings there and ask your provider for the

Thanks for the thought you’ve given , and your reply. If you’ve any other
thoughts about what is triggering this phantom “send†in Outlook, I’d be
really grateful. Re your comments so far:

The Googlemail account seems to be set up OK – I followed the google
instructions, and it’s never mentioned as a problem in the send/receive error
message.

The other email account is with freeserve, and it's set in Outlook as
“receive†only (not send). The setting is in
Options - mail setup – send/receive-(freeserve account) – edit – and uncheck
the “send†option box, just leaving “receiveâ€. The googlemail account shows
as the default account for sending

Freeserve allows you to access email for free, but only send (i.e.,
presumably, log on the smtp server) through dialup or broadband from them –
we stopped ages ago, and are with another broadband provider.

When Outlook starts up, it carries out a send/receive, and that works fine –
it checks for mail on freeserve and Googlemail, and only tries to send
through googlemail. If I send a message, that works OK- it uses the
googlemail account. I think the scheduled send/receive (every 30 minutes) is
OK. For all these, it follows the settings in Outlook –check both accounts
for incoming mail, and use Google to send mail.
The unscheduled “send†is always for one message - “sending 1 message of
1â€. There’s never any message in the outbox waiting to be sent. Obviously, it
cant connect to the Freeserve SMTP server, so it shows an error message
stating this, and tries again a minute or so later ... and another minute
later ... and another .... keeping the computer constantly active and slowed.

Please do keep thinking – any ideas about a setting that I’ve missed, or a
reason for Outlook to try to send a message. I’ve repeatedly checked for
spyware or viruses, and nothing shows.
