Send/Receive - x of y tasks completed multiplying out of control

For the past week, Outlook 2007 has behaving crazily. Whether I click the
Send/Receive button or not - when it checks for new incoming/outgoing email,
instead of the 5 operations (sending & receiving for 2 separate email
accounts and checking for RSS feeds) that it should carry out....all of a
sudden the top of the Outlook Send/Receive Progress window zoom out of
control (14 of 16 tasks completed; 34 of 36 tasks completed; 88 of 90 tasks
completed). It just spirals until I exit the program. And it ALWAYS ask "exit
without sending" - even though it should have already sent out during any one
of its innumerable "tasks".
Any ideas?
I have the latest Norton anti-virus - always up-to-date, and it checks my
system nightly. I've got Outlook 2007 (12.0.6316.5000) SP1 MSO
(12.0.6320.5000)

If you have Norton scanning your email, you've undoubtedly found the
problem. Norton is the single biggest troublemaker for email clients, any
of them, currently on the face of this planet. Uninstall Norton, use their
debris removal tool to get rid of all the crud the uninstaller leaves
behind, then do a custom re-install and DO NOT install any email scanning
components whatsoever. You do not need email scanning, it is entirely
redundant, it does nothing but create problems where none exist, and your
system is still fully protected without it, provided you keep the resident
file system scanner (Auto Protect) up to date.

Frequently asked questions about Norton AntiVirus Email Scanning

Q - Is my computer still protected against viruses if I disable Email
Scanning?
A- Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect
scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email
and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this.
To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
