Send to OneNote Gone After SP1

L

Leslie

Everything was working just fine on my XP Pro SP2 until I ran into a
problem sending a pdf file to OneNote 2007. I got an error message
saying I needed to apply a patch. After trying for two days (tech
problems on MS site), I was directed to the Office site to download
its SP1 patch. I don't run any other Office program; only OneNote
2007. I downloaded the huge service pack, applied the patch and now,
instead of having the option to print to OneNote, I find only MS XPS
Writer. If I use this option, I create a file instead of sending to
OneNote. This is maddening!

What do I do? I was perfectly happy with sending from the printer
menu to OneNote until I ran into the problem with pdf files (which I
first opened in WordPerfect to send; then in Reader 8 (patched) - both
of which produced scrambled output in OneNote.

Please advise,
Leslie

I printed and followed Daniel Escapa's instructions, except my husband
spoke to me at the wrong time and I deleted the XPS Printer before I
went to the ports tab. I ran regedit and deleted every mention of the
XPS Document Printer wherever it occurred in the Registry. Ran
OneNote Repair (a total of 3 times) and rebooted each time.

But, none of these steps re-established the Send to OneNote
capability. I then worked through Patrick Schmid's procedure. I
added a Send to Microsoft OneNote port, selected the default printer
(which I assumed had been done at installation), Named the Printer as
specified, did not share or print test page. BUT when I got to
Advanced tab under Printer Properties, there was no Send to Microsoft
OneNote Driver. SP1 must have overwritten the printer driver! Is it
possible for me to copy this driver (file name needed) from my
installation CD?

Oviously, without the printer driver installed, I still can't send
anything to OneNote and am totally dead in the water. To say that I'm
horrified is the understatement of the week. I saw nothing under
"Known Issues" on this SP to indicate such dire consequences. I don't
think I'll ever apply another patch to this program . . . . if I ever
get it running again. From reading, it appears that even uninstalling
and re-installing doesn't fix this problem which has rendered the
program completely unusable for me.

This is a question to which I do not know answer, someone from MS will have
to chime in on the question about the driver ...

I went back in and under the selected default printer, went to
advanced and selected Send to MS OneNote Driver. Next I Selected
Print Processor and chose OneNotePrint2007, leaving RAW as indicated.
Finally, I verified this "printer" was set Under Ports to "Send to
OneNote" port.

No "Voila" moment occurred. Although it shows up as a valid printer,
when I try to send something to OneNote, even though it looks as if
the pdf file is being formatted and sent, it apparently goes to "Data
Heaven." It certainly doesn't go to OneNote OR any other printer
attached to my LAN. As I indicated in my earlier post, I believe the
print driver was overwritten during the SP1 patch application.

If you go to "start" "printers and faxes" and double-click on the "send to
onenote" printer, it brings up a window that shows you the print queue.

If this is open when you print a PDF to OneNote, does the print job appear
in the queue? If you go to the "printer" menu, make sure "use printer
offline" is unchecked.

1. When I send a document to OneNOte, nothing shows up in the print
queue for this virtual printer.

2. Changing setting to use printer offline has no effect. Nothing is
sent to OneNote.

So far, absolutely nothing I've tried has helped in the least. Is
there any listing of files add/changed from Office SP1? I'm willing
to go through my entire Registry to wipe out every single thing this
cursed download did. Because I have no other Office programs, I can't
imagine what it could have changed other than in OneNote.

I haven't tried uninstalling OneNote and reinstalling yet (because
other posters had said it didn't help). Is this worth a try?

I am truly desperate here . . . . .

I'm not a windows expert and my troubleshooting knowlege has been exhausted,
so my next steps would be:

1) run the office diagnostics (in OneNote go to "help" , "office
diagnostics"), if that doesn't work,
2) uninstall/reinstall, (expecting to manually set up the printer again from
the post from user "Kelvin"); if that doesn't work,
3) contact the MS support ("help", "contact us"),

Good luck, Leslie.

YouBetcha: I've got the program fixed. Because I added some steps to
your last recs, I'm listing them in case they may be of help to some
other poor soul. Keep in mind that two of the steps are generally
frowned on MS MVPs, but years of experience induced me to perform
them.

1. I ran Office diagnostics which told me that the program was
working perfectly. Wrong!

2. I uninstalled OneNote.

3. I ran ATF-Cleaner to remove all traces of any temp, etc. files.

4. I ran Registry Cleaner to remove all traces of OneNote and SP1.
(frowned on my MVPs)

5. Under Control Panel/Printers and Faxes, I deleted the Send to
OneNote Printer previously created.

6. In the same area, I deleted the XPS port created by SP1.

7. I ran Registry Cleaner to make certain all traces of the above
were out of the Registry (frowned upon by MVPs).

8. I re-booted the computer.

9. Everything is there. Send to OneNote works. The installation
program found and pointed to my notebook files which are maintained on
a different logical drive. The only thing I later changed in OneNote
file locations was unfiled notes location which I prefer on a
different logical drive (along with my notebooks) than the operating
system.

I can't thank you enough for your help and encouragement.

Leslie,
Can I verify that between steps 8 and 9 is where you re-installed OneNote?
If it is, could you reply here and also email me the list of steps. I want
to get this documented somewhere more permanent and findable for the next
person with the question.

To email me "unknot" my reply address.

I've emailed Kathy that ,yes, I reinstalled OneNote 2007 between above
Step 8 and 9. Sorry I wasn't more specific. I did not have to
manually install the Send to OneNote Printer as Kelvin has suggested
would be necessary. OneNote took care of everything during the
installation process.

I believe something from SP1 gets left behind somewhere after
uninstallation . . . in the Registry or perhaps it's the XPS port, and
this is why other people have found that reinstalling OneNote did not
solve the problem. Or, maybe I just got lucky.

Leslie,
I didn't get your email. Can you make sure you sent it to the right address?
It should have been sent to call _ kathy at cox . net (remove spaces and
replace at).
