Sending a document and keeping the margins set

I just sent my resume to a friend who said it looked all screwy, i.e.
not the way it looked to me. It seems the margins I had set (.8 all
around) were not being imported to her program when she opened up my
document. Is this a common problem and is there anyway to safeguard
against it? Must the Word programs be identical?

Not sure I would advise .8 in margins on a resume. However, it's not
necessarily that the margins weren't imported--text flow changes depending
on Word program, operating system, and printer driver. See here:

(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

Since you are on a Mac, convert your resume to pdf to send to employers, to
ensure they see what you do. That's the main safeguard. Since pdf will also
shrink the doc a tad, your .8 margins might then look like 1in.
