sending a message to a distribution list

When I try to send a message to a distribution list in my contacts, I get a
message that says "Microsoft Outlook does not recognize..." I use Microsoft
Office 2000. I am not able to create a distribution list in my address book
due to restrictions w/ my company.
What should I do?
