Sending E-Mail Forms

Hi there,

I am in the middle of a roll out of forms developed in InfoParh 2003 SP2,
and upon instillation on the Field Agents Laptops when you click to send the
form it comes up with the error:

"To use this feature Microsoft Office outlook 2003 must be set as the
default e-mail program."

The current set up is with Outlook Express. Is there a fix to this, or a way
around this so the form can be sent with OE?

Please help.

many thanks
Dan

I am afraid not Dan, at least not easily.

The default email submit only works with the corresponding Outlook client
from the Office version. So with InfoPath 2003 you can only use Outlook
2003, not 2007.

It is possible to create a form which uses code to simulate the email submit
but then the form must be full trust which increases the complexity. Ot they
have to manually atttach the forms to an email.

Hi Clay,

Thanks for the reponce. I've gone with the manual attach option for now, but
was looking to roll this out for all the forms we use! might need to re-think
this now.

Do we know what Microsoft stopped this link with Outlook Express? It seems
really bizarre. I can knid of understand the link between 2003 and 2007 as
2007 is built on different platforms, but for InfoPath 2003 not to interact
with OE seems strange!

I also dont fully understand the full trust aspect of these forms. Do you
have a good link, or an explaination that can enlighten me?

Thanks again for your help

My guess is that since InfoPath only comes in the Office Suite that they
decided to only support Outlook and created the integration very tight.

So they either need to switch to Outlook instead or come up with another
transfer method.

One option I have seen before is to set up a network share and then have
each laptop setup offline access to it. That way when they are in the field
the laptop still sees the folder and they can save (submit) to it. Once back
in the office they sync and the files are merged back to the central share.
Internal users can monitor these files or folders for each user and pick up
the forms. You would just need to be careful that they do not have duplicate
form names.

Full trust is creating an installable package for the form which each user
would install. Also then you would need to create code that would attach the
form and send the email to the default mail client.
