sending email from outlook using AOL

T

Tom

After much exasperation have finally got outlook to send email whilst using
my AOL internet connection. The issue is that I have to have my aol email
address entered in the Outlook email box but I use my outlook email address
in the reply email address box.

The problem is that any recipient of an email from outlook will see my aol
email address in the from box and if they click on reply it will be sent to
my aol email box and not to my outlook email box.

If my aol email address is not entered, in the Outlook email box, the email
is rejected by aol.

Using AOL 9 & Outlook 2002

Any advice/suggestions appreciated [apart from from changing ISP - it would
be a major problem to move to a new ISP] would be appreciated.

TIA

Tom

Can you not just change your "reply to" address in your Internet mail
account ?

T

Tom

Yes have already done that but the recipient of my email see my aol address
in the from line and there is a tendency for the recipient to use that email
address instead of the Internet mail account.

There's no such thing as an "Outlook email address". Outlook gets
configured to use whatever address you like or that your ISP has created for
you. If that ISP is AOL, then configure it to use that one. If it's AT&T
Yahoo, then configure it to use that one. If you want, configure it to use
either and you get to pick when you send the message.
The problem is that any recipient of an email from outlook will see
my aol email address in the from box and if they click on reply it
will be sent to my aol email box and not to my outlook email box.

There is no "Outlook email box". The mailboxes to which messages get sent
are suppoied by your ISP and you configure Outlook to access whichever of
them you wish. For example, with my home Outlook installation I monitor
several mailboxes and can send messages whose sender address is the address
of whichever mailbox I wish to receive the reply.
If my aol email address is not entered, in the Outlook email box, the
email is rejected by aol.

You have to configure Outlook correctly to circumvent this and it appears
you haven't done so.

They'd have to deliberately type in the address instead of clicking reply to
make this work, however.

They'd have to go out of their way to do that. You might consider using a
signature that says "please don't reply to the AOL address" - but I strongly
suggest you just concentrate on ditching AOHell.

Possibly confusion in terminology.

To clarify what I refered to as the Outlook email box is on the General tab
under user information there is a box for Email address into which if my AOL
email address is not included the mail is rejected by AOL, underneath that
box is another box refering to Reply address. Irrespective of what email
address is entered there the recipient sees on the received email, in the
from box, is my name and my AOL email address but if they click on reply the
To field shows whatever was shown in the Reply address field. In other words
the email recipient receives an email from me, showing my aol address, and
when they click on reply the To field will show a different email address.
This is causing quite a bit of confusion which I am trying to avoid.

Appreciate the suggestion but am trying to avoid confusing the email
recipient by having the email arrive from one email address and being sent
to another. Unfortunately dumping AOL would be a major hassle and, for
commercial reasons, is unfortunately not really an option.

Click Tools>E-mail Accounts>Next. Select your account and click Change. In
the "E-mail Address" field, enter whatever address you want your recipient
to see. It doesn't have to be the AOL address. In the "Logon Information"
boxes, put your AOL credentials and in the "Server Information" area, put
the proper server values for AOL.. Click More Settings. On the General tab
remove whatever you have in the "Reply E-mail: field. Select the Outgoing
Server tab, check the box marked "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires
authentication" and select the radio button labeled "Use same settings as my
incoming mail server". Click OK. That should allow you to send through AOL
with out an AOL address as sender, because you're logging into AOL with the
correct credentials.

You can have two accounts exactly like that, one with the AOL address and
the other with the address of your choosing. When sending, use the Accounts
button on the Compose windows toolbar to choose which sending address you
want your recipient to see.

Have tried your suggestion and it does not work if the Outlook incoming mail
box in non AOL i.e the username & password for the incoming mail box will
differ to the AOL username & password.

I think there is some confusion here. The email address you put in to the
"Email address" box is NOT the same as the log-on details. You can put
anything you like in the email address box, as long as the account username
and password are your AOL details. Similarly under the "more settings"
button you can specify a different reply-to email address. If you put
something in there, then no matter what you put in the Email Address box on
the front page of the account setup, anyone who clicks on "reply" to an
email from you will automatically send that reply to the Reply-To email
address you specified.

Use different credentials for the incoming and outgoing servers, as
appropriate.
