sending HTML table column widths not working

I composed a Web page in Word X which had a table that was two columns
wide. In some of the cells, I had headings that we gif files that were
exactly the width of the cell. However, whenever I do "send to mail
recipient (as HTML)", when I go to Entourage, the width of the columns
become very wide so that the graphic headers are too short. The text
follows the width of the columns but the graphic headers remain small.
I have tried all sorts of things in Word (increasing graphics' sizes,
using fixed width columns, increasing width of the entire table,
etc.). Nothing seems to work.

Any ideas?
