sending mail to part of a distribution list

Since upgrading to Outlook 2002 I cannot see a simple way
of using a distribution list but only send a mail to some
of the people listed on it.

The long way of re-opening in the outbox and deleting
names seems a backward step.

I have looked in the help section but cannot find this
topic listed.
