sending mail when multiple accounts exist

J

John Keith

I am using OL98 with WinXP and I am observing that with three
different mail accounts that are set up I am only able to actually
send mail when I select the default account. Is this normal behavior
or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for any tips!

Well, not quite. The answer to your question will depend on the mail support
mode of Outlook 98 you are using and the mail account types you are using.
No one can answer your question accurately when you do not provide that
information.

I simply don't see how this answers the original question, since it doesn't
mention webmail in the slightest.

OK, here's some additional info:

Internet Accounts, mail, Account #1

POP3
incoming mail: pop.juno.com
outgoing mail: smtp.myISP.net

Internet Accounts, mail, Account #2

POP3
incoming mail: pop.myISP.net
outgoing mail: smtp.myISP.net

NOTE: outgoing mail is the same for both accounts.

Account #1 is my default account.

When I select "Send and Receive" and then Account #1 (default) and I
have outgoing mail I get a window that shows both a sending activity
and a receiving activity.

But, when I select "Send and Receive" and then Account #2 and I have
outgoing mail I get a window that only shows a receiving activity as
if I had no messages in the Outbox folder.

My original question related to why I can not send mail from Account
#2 (the non-default account even when I have mail to send.

I am not asking about webmail type of accounts.

But note, I am successfully downloading juno email from their
pop.juno.com server. (Sending mail through their smtp server is a
topic for adifferent thread! Anybody ever succeed at this???)

You still left out too much information to solve this.
Do unsent messages actually remain in the Outbox when you poll Account #2?
What command did you use to initiate the Send from the New message window?

I'll try to fill in the blanks.
Do unsent messages actually remain in the Outbox when you poll Account #2?

Message remain in the Outbox with the note "This message has not been
sent" (or something to that effect.)
What command did you use to initiate the Send from the New message window?

I'm confused by the term "New message window" so I'm not sure how to
answer this. Here's the process:

After composing message I click on send which puts the message in the
Outbox. Then I click on "Send and Receive" and a drop down box opens
with my choices for accounts to use. I click on one of the accounts
and another window opens that shows activities, such as "sending mail
on account.... " if there is a message in the Outbox and "receiving
mail on account..... If I already have a connection to the internet
the activities are executed, if I am not connected to the internet
another window opens asking me what dialup connection to use.

My problem again is when I select the non-default service to use and I
have at least one message in the outbox when the activity winodw opens
it only shows an activity for receiving mail, never an activity to
send mail.

(PS - when I was reproducing the events described above I noticed one
other artifact. After I had tried the non-default account and the
message was not sent, I then went tot he default account and it also
did not recognize that a message was waiting in the outbox. I had to
delete that message and place a new one in the Outbox and then the
default mail account would again recognize a message was ready to
send.)

BTW Russ, thanks for commenting on my issue. I hope I've given you
enough info, but if not I'm open for more questions.

Bingo.
You clicked on "Send" in the new message window.
Outlook is doing exactly what you are telling it to do. "Send" tells Outlook
to use your default account. Had you wanted Outlook to use a different
account, you should have told Outlook to do so using the "Send Using..."
command to specify a different account when you created the message. Account
selection is done on a per message basis at the time the message is created.
So when you poll Account #2, Outlook has no messages to send because there
are no messages that were designated to be sent over Account #2.

Thanks Russ!

Indeed I assumed that send just put the message in the Outbox and did
not associate that message with a specifc account to use. I was using
the Send icon on the toolbar which does not give a choice of which
account to use (obviously it uses the default account.) I understand
now that I have to go the the File menu to select "send using..."

Thanks for the insight. This had bothered me for a long and it was not
intuitively obvious (to me) what was going on!

Thanks again.

You're not at fault. Nothing in IMO mode was intuitively obvious. That's why
we're all glad it's long gone.

authenticating to the outgoing server?

I've looked at a Juno web page that talks about authentication and
I've tried numerous experiments but I have yet to succeed at sending
mail through the juno smtp server.

I've checked the box that says "My server requires authentication"
and I've also checked the box that says "Use the same settings as my
incoming mail server" (on the outgoing mail server window). Since I
am successfully downloading mail from Juno I'm assuming that my
log in is OK.

An issue I have questioned is whether I can access the Juno
smtp server through any ISP or do I have to use Juno's phone numbers
to get access to their server.

Maybe I'm missing a key point somewhere. Can you offer any
suggestions?

I'm all ears to any suggestions or hearing from someone who has
successfully connected to Juno's smtp server and sent mail through it.

Thanks for listening!

So, you're connected to some ISP other than Juno? If that's the case,
select the option in the authentication to specify the username/password and
try putting the username/password for the non-Juno ISP in the fields. I
don't know if that will work, but it's worth a shot.

That may well be your problem - many ISPs block access to port 25 for any
but their own servers. There is no need, however, to send mail for your
Juno account through the Juno servers - just set up your Juno account to
point to the outgoing server of the account that *can* send and you'll be
fine.

That is exactly what I am doing right now. One of my Outlook accounts
is download via Juno and send through my current ISP. Another account
is both send and receive through Juno (that is the one I'm trying to
troubleshoot.) And yet a third account is to both send and receive
through my ISP (I can't get that account to forward mail yet to juno
since there is no mechanism available to me to do that and I can't get
the techs to set it up!)

So I am sending mail OK but I like the challenge of trying to figure
out what is going on. And I am preparing to shut down my current ISP
and this mail issue is one link in the process.

When I was reading Brian's last post I had the thought that the
original reason for my post (default account associated with message
in outbox) might be my problem but quick experiments seem to not work
out.

Thanks for the info on port 25 though!
