Sent email sits indefinitely in Outbox with no sent date

When I send an email, it goes into the Outbox but has no sent date (says
None). The email sits there indefinitely. I have to reopen the email and
click send again for it to actually be delivered properly. Does anyone know
what I could try to fix this?
