Sent Items actually not sent?

Hi,

I have an instance where a user shows an email in her Sent Items. That mail
however didn't arrive at the Recipient, and apparently this mail didn;t even
reach the server.

We run Exch2009, and the user is running Outlook2007 within the organisation.

My question is, can an e-mail actually show in the Sent Items, even if it
has actually not been sent?

I suppose it could if she moved it, but its more likely it was sent but lost
along the way.

Is an antivirus program scanning outgoing email? That could cause it.
Does she have more than one account configured?
Did she get an NDR and delete it (or was it moved to junk). Check for rules
deleting NDRs.

We are running McAffee which does scan mail but i don't think that would have
caused it. Only one account is configured, no NDR was recieved and no rules
exist. What may be of note is that the user was on a mobile aircard at the
time, not on the LAN.

My question however remains - Is it possible for an email to end up in the
sent items if it was actually not sent?

i'm not too concerned about where the mail is, or even what happened to it,
rather that it can show as sent but it actually wasn't sent.

In general, no, particularly if SMTP is used to send it. Outlook moves an
outgoing message from Outbox to Sent Items when it receives ackowledgement
from the SMTP server that it has accepted the message. If the message never
makes it to the recipient, then it's the mail server's fault.

Scanning outgoing e-mail most definitely can cause the issue, but since you
say you don't scan mail, that pretty much indicates the mail server.
