Sent items remaining in outbox

I have a user running Office 2000 and occasionally some
messages remain in the outbox after being sent. The
messages are received by the receipients as they have
replied to these sent messages, yet they they remain in
the outbox as if unsent. Does anyone have any Ideas on
how to correct this?
