separate windows in Excel 2003

Is there a way in Excel 2003 to bring up spreadsheets in separate windows
instead of all spreadsheets in windows within a parent window? I think it
used to work this way.

There's an option (added with xl2k) that allowed separate windows within the
same instance:

Tools|options|view tab|Check Windows in Taskbar.

Tools>OptionsView "Windows in Taskbar" will give you Icons on the Taskbar for
each open Window.

What I am looking for is a separate instance of Excel wheneverI double click

You could try:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (check it)

I don't use Word 2003, but Word2002 only runs one instance--but the windows
(menubars) do make it look like separate instances. (File|Exit will close all
the documents open in that instance.)

And by having multiple instances, things become a little more difficult.

Try copy|pastespecial|formulas from one instance to the other (for example).

I like one instance.

I tried that. It brings up separate instances, but the windows come up
empty - no spreadsheet. I then have to go open the spreadsheets by hand.

Enabling this option is one way to fix this problem.

Maybe you could just start a new instance, then file|open your workbooks.

windows start button|run
excel

starts that separate instance for me--or just a shortcut to excel.exe on the
desktop???
