I have figure numbers in captions attached to pictures, one per page, in a
Word document. The document consists of nothing else. When I insert a new
picture in the middle of the document, the figure numbers of the pictures on
the following pages adjust automatically. So, a picture that used to be
Figure 4 becomes Figure 5 when a new picture is inserted before it. So far,
so good. But, when I delete a picture and its caption, all of the figure
numbers following it remain unchanged. Figure 4 should become Figure 3, but
it doesn't. As a result, there's a missing figure number in the series,
which skips from Figure 2 right to Figure 4. How can I get the figure
numbers to behave correctly?
