Sequential Number in Data Access Page

Does anyone know what is the best way to generate a sequential unique number
in a data access page. I tried with auto number in the underlying table and
it just acts weird like sometimes jumps the numbers and does not follow the
sequence pattern. I am looking for some alternate solution to auto number.
Any help is appreciated.
