serial number

my company use a pro-forma table for our client work. but when processing the information into a database we need to identify each hand-written sheet. we concluded we needed a serial number. however to avoid creating a 1000 page document we want to create just one 'master' document. the idea is that each time the document is printed from this master (kept on our network) the document will automatically update the serial number as it is printed
is this possible?!
