Serious Bug using Office 2000 with Project Server 2003 and WSS

David Blair

Please help. We are using Office 2000 and have installed Project Server
2003 with WSS on a Windows 2003 server. All is fine except we cannot edit
documents with Word 2000 that were uploaded to WSS. Worse (and a show
stopper) is that if we try either the 'Check Out' or 'Discuss' feature from
the Documents page, the users Office Profile gets corrupted and each web
page from then on requests a Windows logon (because Windows doesn't know who
you are anymore). Company policy states that 3 unsuccessful logons
deactivates the user.

Any way to remove those commands or anyone have a solution? (Besides
upgrading everyone in the company to Office 2003)

Thanks,

David

David:

You'll find significant functionality reduction using Office 2000 with
Project Server 2003 and WSS. The new Office version is the first (IMO) in a
long time to offer a compelling upgrade story and well worth a look. You can
disable discussions and these are not enabled by default. You do not need to
enable version control either.

If you can give me a step-by-step write up on reproducing the problem and a
description of the desktop environment on which this happens, I can submit
it to the quality team for review.

Thanks Gary...

I am unclear how to disable discussions and version control (the inability
to edit at least has an error message). I did not specifically enable them,
and all WSS functionality is default. If it is possible to remove those
menu options from the Document pull down command list, that would be great.

The setup: Network is running Win 2000, Active Directory, One domain. Office
2000 Premium for all users and is it a local Profile (not roaming).

The steps: Select a project in project center and go to Documents. Upload
a Word Doc from local hard disk. Select the document in PWA and pull down
the list of commands on the right of the document name, and select either:
'Check out' or 'Discuss'. The result is the Web Page appears to hang for a
few seconds and then a NT Username dialog pops up asking for User and
Password. (I suspect at this point, the Office profile is lost as it does
not affect other users, so Session Mgr is still working). Now the user
cannot navigate anywhere on the system without the Username challenge and
they cannot login again. (And as I said, 3 unsuccesful challenges and you're
out). The only thing that fixes it, is to create a new profile. (I'll be
honest in that I do not know exactly what is going on under the hood, but
the new profile at least lets users work the system again as long as they
don't press those commands)

Thanks very much.

Gary,

It's worse than I thought. I went to a test machine that has Office 2003
and went through the steps all the way to 'Discuss' (check out seems fine).
Now I can't use Project Server because each web page I try to go to, I have
to log in each time. I can get to the web page, but I am challenged each
time with a username and password and selecting to 'Save Password' doesn't
work. Ahhhhhhh!!!

Gary,

More info... I think I found what is going on, but I do not know what is
causing it. Everything that is happening is local and I believe in the
registry. When I go through the steps to cause the problem there is an
entry in the registry that somehow does not know who I am logged in as
anymore. In fact, even if I 'Cancel' the Username dialog a few times, the
PWA web page eventually shows. Here is the location of the entry:

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3865435737-3326842981-867535038-1005\Software\Microsoft
\Office\11.0\Common\Internet\Server Cache]

I'm not a registry guy, but if I deleted the entry below this one that
refers to my Server name, log out and back in, things work fine. Just don't
touch the Discuss button.

David:

Thanks for the updates, I've passed along the information and will get back
to you when I learn more.

Hi David.

Gary's brought this concern to my attention, and I wanted to take this
opportunity to respond.

As Gary already mentioned, there will certainly be limited/reduced
functionality if you use Microsoft Office 2000 with Microsoft Windows
SharePoint Services, whether or not Microsoft Project Server 2003 is
involved. You can demonstrate this by going directly into SharePoint and
uploading a document and observing the behavior of how Microsoft Word
interacts with the document.

For a good overview of what does and does not with between Microsoft Office
2000 and Microsoft Windows Sharepoint Services, see the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/sharepoint/prodinfo/officeintegration.mspx

In addition, it really would be helpful if we could get your situation
reviewed by Product Support Services. That way, we could capture the steps
to reproduce the problem (if the problem is reproducible) and report the
problem. Without steps to reproduce te problem, it's difficult for us to
further assist.

There are multiple ways to contact Microsoft Product Support Services for
assistance. The best place for you to review your options is
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=cntactms&style=home.
