"serious error when opening" message

I've just recently been upgraded from Proj 2003 to 07, and set my options to
re-open the last project file at startup. Every time I start up project,
regardless of wht proj file is being opened, I get the message "The
dosument...caused a serious error the last time it was opened. Would you
like to continue opening it?" A "yes" successfully opens the file, which
appears to be totally intact from its previous state. Does any one know what
causes this "nuisance-type" message to appear, and is there any way to
eliminate it?

Thanks in advance.

Have you installed Service Pack 2 yet (strongly recommended)?

Yes as Project Pro focuses on using a local cache for retaining schedules.
If he is using Standard then the schedules will be at a directory location.
If on Pro then I would recommend Publishing the schedules to be retained,
deleting the cache, and then open the schedule he wants to be the automatic
one. I suspect he has a pointer problem which would be located with the
cache area. The other issue is since he used 2003 and now is on 2007 his
configuration setups may not be correct.

"About" says 12.0.6423.1000 SP2 MSO (12.0.6425.1000); I do not know if that
means Pro or Std. I suspect it's standard, as there aren't any current plans
for "sharing" files that I've been informed of.

How do I determine if my config setups are right or not? Is there some site
or reference I can refer to or refer my technician to?

My "save" options have projects going to my directories (space) on a Netware
server, with templates coming from my local drive. There is no entry for
schedules in the list.

You made no mention that you are using Project Server 2007 with Microsoft
Project 2007, so I think you should ignore the comments made by the last
responder about the Local Project Cache. I tested my own Microsoft Project
Professional 2007 installation by selecting the "Open Last File on Startup"
option and I can now confirm the EXACT behavior you are seeing. Every time
I launch the software, I see a warning dialog about the last project file
causing a "serious error". I see this error message, no matter which file
was the last one I worked with.

So, I immediately suspected that you and I both are seeing some kind of bug
with Microsoft Project 2007, or else you and I both have a damaged
installation of Microsoft Project 2007. Out of curiosity, I ran the Office
Diagnostics feature in the software (Help - Microsoft Office Diagnostics) to
determine if my software installation is damaged. Of course, it was NOT
damaged! So, you and I are seeing a bug. I searched the Microsoft Project
2007 Knowledge Base web site, but found no mention of this behavior as a
bug.

My best advice is to deselect the "Open Last File on Startup" option and let
the software create a new blank file every time you launch the software.
Hope this helps.

Hello Dale and vabki,

Yes, this is a bug that Mike Glen (MVP) found awhile ago. I
don't believe it has anything to do with Server as I see the same
error not connected to server.

Yes, Julie, but we've had no response from Microsoft, and I can't see them doing anything about it for the 2007 version We'll just have to live with it!

I agree, Mike. I don't believe this one is high on the "fix"
list as it is still possible to use the tool with the exception
of automatically opening the last file on start up.
