Serious errors when saving documents in Word 2007

Hi, please help! I switched to Word 2007 from Word 2003 some time last year,
and since then have had problems when I try to save documents to my laptop's
hard disk (and not to any network drive or removable media). What happens is
that very often an error message will pop up stating that Word has not been
able to access a certain file. I am then asked if I would like to retry the
save. Although I am then given an opportunity to specify a new name for the
file, the result is usually that Word will say that it has lost data and that
the document and Word itself will now close. When I reopen the saved file, it
is usually corrupted, something like 300 pages long and filled with nonsense
characters. What is happening, and what can I do to solve the problem? I am
very tempted to revert to using an earlier version of Word as I never had
this problem previously.
