serious installation problem Office

Have run into some trouble after trying to install Office XP developer.
The situation was as follows:
Windows XP Pro with Office 2003, all working fine.
Uninstalled Office 2003
Installed Office XP and Office Developer
Then installed Office 2003, uninstalling Office XP in the process.
This last step must have been a mistake as Office Developer didn't work with
the error message:
unexpected error...

The problem now is that I can't uninstall Office 2003, the uninstallation
just hangs without any error message.
Tried reinstalling Office 2003, but that hangs as well.
I have deleted one PendingFileRenameOperation key from the registry, but
that didn't help either.
It doesn't help that after every failed install or uninstall I have to
reboot as the previous process blocks the next.
I have downloaded the MS utility to resolve failed installations (file
msicuu2.exe), but that doesn't install either.
I have tried msiexec /unregister and msiexec /regserver but that made no
difference either.
There is on temp file ZLT04ea7.TMP that perhaps might be causing a problem,
but I can't delete it as it is in use (even after a reboot) and I can't
figure out what is using it.
Have run out of ideas out apart from drastic measures that might be causing
more trouble.

Any advice here?
