Server error message

Brad

I'm running into a problem with new Dell computers running
XP Pro and Office 2003 Pro. Outlook loses its connection
to the Exchange server (2000). A login window eventually
pops up asking you to log back on. Some times it works
and all is fine. Some times Outlook needs restarted. Its
very annoying and causes, I believe, the computers to be
very slow running because they're trying to connect.
Any help is appreciated!!!!

Hi - this is not likely to be an Outlook issue. More likely due to network
problems/misconfiguration.

Some things to look at, for starters:
1) All servers & workstations should be set to a specific speed/duplex
setting in their NIC configuration - don't use autosense. If your network
switch/hub will support it, try 100Mbps/full duplex.
2) All servers and workstations should specify *only* the internal
AD-integrated DNS server's IP address in their network settings. The
AD-integrated DNS server should be set up with forwarders to your ISP's DNS
servers for external resolution. See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300202 for more
info.
3. Are you on fast switched Ethernet, or a workgroup hub? Switches have
gotten quite inexpensive these days....best to invest in a managed one so
you can lock down the ports on the switch at 100/full as well.
4. Is your cabling known to be good? Rung down/tested at 100Mbps? Have you
tried different patch cables?
