I will be posting several questions related to problems
when using FP 2000 to construct larger sites.
Configuration:
==============
Remote Server: Apache under FreeBSD 4.8-RELEASE /FP2000
Ext. SR 1.4, 500 MB storage, 60% utilization
Website: sudomain/subweb of 1350 files, 16 folders, 208 MB
Network Connection: DSL: 384K/128K
Local Workstation: Windows 2000 all updates, FP2000 all
updates.
==============
After adding several hundred product pages to the site, we
found that making changes to shared borders (used by all
pages) caused update times in the hours - since FP
downloads, edits, and uploads each page across the DSL
link. Due to the limitations of MS Commerce Manager these
files can't be split into subwebs.
During our attempt to make these updates we received
several errors including a dialog containing: "An error
occurred accessing your FrontPage web files. Authors - if
authoring agains a web server, please contact the
webmaster for this server's site. Webmasters - please see
the server's system log for more details." And we
experienced timeout dialogs every 5-minutes requesting
that we log in again: "This operation requires author
permission for xxx.com:80...".
We decided to download the site to our local workstation
(in a fresh directory under "MyWebs") then upload the site
back to the remote server after making a batch of
changes. Downloading was attempted with FP's "File |
Publish Web" function into a local directory selected with
the "browse" button. This operation failed with a server
error dialog box: "Server error: Unable to process
request. Subwebs have been created since you last
accessed this web. Refresh your view and try again."
Apparently the site can't be downloaded. I would use FTP
but it scrambles the FP structure.
What can be done to fix this problem?
