Server error

Shawn

I have been unable to open my web page due to a server
error. I have spoken to and e-maied my web server
(IPOWER) over & over and they keep telling me my frontpage
2002 files are corrupt and I need to un-install and re-
install my Frontpage. I have and the same error keeps
coming up it reads as follows:

Server Error: FrontPage requires that the AllowOveride
option be set to something other than "none" (typically
set in access.conf) "All" is the preferred AllowOveride
option for the document Root.

I can't figure out if it's my setting or my web server,
they claim, it's my files that are corrupt, however, I
also have another web site with the same server and I am
able to open & edit with the same FrontPage software which
they claim are corrupt, which doesn't seem to make any
sense.

If anyone has seen this error, or might have an idea how
to fix it i desperately need help, I have been trying to
solve this proble x 1 month. I am not able to open my web
site to even edit it.

thanks

Shawn

Have you sent a copy of the error message to your host?

I have informed the server by e-mail and by phone, either
way technical support insists that it is my FontPage files
that are corrupt and they have nothing to do with it.

Shawn,

However since you can open and work with the other site, then your FP client is not the problem.

Shawn:

You can't open and edit... but can you publish from your local
system to the remote system ? If there are any problems that
you have created, publishing should fix them. I'd make a wild
guess that you can't publish to that directory either - but you
should try just putting the site out there fresh to see what it
does.

If you do not have local copies of your sites, *stop* whatever you
are doing, make copies of them, then resume your life. Never leave
your only copy of a site on a remote server.

This refers to the configuration of the Apache server. The AllowOveride
directive is probably in httpd.conf, since access.conf is not often used
nowadays.

The problem arises when installing FPextensions to a server or virtual
server - the default value for AllowOveride is "none", and this must be
changed before the extensions can be installed. The problem is mentioned at
http://www.rtr.com/fpsupport/apache2_fp_install.htm
(rtr produce the extensions for Unix servers)
