Server Timeout

I just started getting server timeout errors when attempting to publish
to one of my FP webs. I uninstalled and reinstalled the server
extensions on the remote server with no success. I can logon to the live
site from FP. I was going to do a Check&Fix of the local extensions but
the FPMMC console does not show the Task options. The Fpsrvadm option is
not available. I am running FP2K on Win XP Pro. I am not using a local
server [IIS not installed]. How do I administer the local server extensions?

I'm a little confused. You say you are *not* using a local server, IIS not
installed, yet wonder how to administer local server extentions. You can't,
because they are not installed.

Are you referring to the remote server extensions? If so, which version?

Hi Tom,
The local server extenstions ARE installed as I have been publishing to
my online website the last 5 years.
I have this problem with just one of my FP webs. Currently have 2 and
can publish to the other one with no problem. I had someone else test
from their system and they could pub to the site so it points the
problem to my local system, to the settings for this particular web
somehow. I believe that I am using the FP Server that gets automatically
installed. Am a bit fuzzy on this as haven't had to look at the server
extensions since my FP98 days. They've worked well till now on FP2K. My
remote server control panel just tells me they are installed, not which
version is being used but they've worked well until now.

I did use SystemMechanic the other day to "optomize my web connections"
and it did something but I cannot determine what it did as there is no
logfile or undo for that function.

I thought of publishing from the remote to my local system but realized
that wouldn't prove anything except that I can receive the information.

2. Unless you have IIS or PWS installed, then you don't have "Local Server Extensions" installed.

3. FP2000 doesn't install IIS or PWS.

If everything was working prior to installing and running System Mechanic, I am not sure anyone will
be able to help you, as to what it changed

2. Pardon my ignorence, but how would I know if a server is running?
I've looked in the Services running console and don't see anything that
looks like a webserver. If I know what name to look for or where I'd be
further ahead.
- I can save files and preview locally on my browser [with the warnings
about functionality] so there must be something running to allow that.
I've been doing it that way for years.

I just can't understand why it affects just one website altho it is a
large one to check for file changes.

In your IE browser, type: http://localhost, this will indicate if your have a web server installed
and running

The warning message indicate that you don't have a web server installed, as well if you open your
local web via c:\... then you are working with disk-based webs, not server-based webs.

How large it the site with the problem, number of files, total overall file size, etc?

- Web size is currently 65.88 Megabytes[from ControlPanel],
approximately 8-900 files, majority of pages 20-30KB.
- Operating procedure is I start FrontPage & it opens in current web and
I either go from there or close the web and go to another one.
What is frustrating is that I can open the web online and even edit if I
wish but cannot publish the latest changes.

Just tried a move directory while logged into both local site and online
and got error:
500 Internal Server Error
Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or
misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator,
(e-mail address removed) and inform them of the time the
error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused
the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use
an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I think this error relates to my local system but I don't know where to

A 500 server error is coming from the destination server, not your local machine.

It is time to consider splitting the web into smaller subwebs / subsites (your host allows), by
country or region, as this would make publishing faster, and would deal with pages within the subweb
/ subsite.

At some point you might want to look at a database driven solution, which may enable you to
eliminate 50% of your actual pages.

At present the content is generated by an Access db with output to html
pages and was never designed to be an online db. I don't really have a
way to break it into subwebs durnit.

How does one overcome/fix a 500servererror? I have reset server
extensions twice at the online site to no effect. It can't be that all
of a sudden the size of the site is disturbing the server as I've been
updating it for 5 years and it isn't that much bigger than it was. I
guess it is something I have to take up with the support people there as
it appears there ain't no easy fix.

You need to contact your web host, as it is a server issue, they will need to review the server log
files to help determine the issue.
