I just had this same problem. I was able to determine that a missing "GUID"
was causing the installation to fail. Microsoft's Knowledge Base gives a
very complicated solution to this problem. I found an easier way. Get out
your original installation source, open any Office program (I used Word). On
the top tool bar under Help there's a Detect and Repair option. Run this.
If you have any other Office programs that weren't part of your original
Office installation (I have FrontPage) you need to run Detect and Repair for
these programs too. I restarted my computer after this (I'm not sure it's
necessary, but I did it to be safe). Then I ran the Office Update inside
Word (again an Option under Help). The update was already downloaded so it
jumped straight to install. AND IT WAS SUCCESSFUL THIS TIME! I hope this
works for you too. Good luck.

Tried your solution but unfortunately it did not work. Ended up downloading
the full file, all 93 meg of it, ran that and it worked. Thank goodness for
bt broadband, only took 13 minutes. Apparently the full file does not need
to access the install files from the cd or on the hard drive if you chose to
leave them there after installation as I did. I suspect it's the accessing
of these files thats the problem

Thanks for your response though, it was much appreciated.
