Service pack 3... 'may' (does) require the Office XP

D

David Webb

Hi,

Lately my outlook has been very unstable and I ran the error reporter and
found that there was a service pack 3 update available. I'm in a bit of a
prediciment however as when I downloaded it (opting for the larger, no
required source file) I was prompted to insert the cd.

This wouldn't be a problem, if it weren't for the fact that the PC I'm using
is a Compaq tablet pc. Which conveniently enough doesn't have a CD rom. I did
have an external USB cd rom but it had an unfortunate accident involving my
older brother, and now it doesn't work.

I'm not so great with networking and I can't get my cd rom shared so I was
wondering if it were possible to overide this command.

If anyone could help, it'd be much appreciated.

Thanking you in advance,

Dave

Hi, David,

You could try the full file version of the patch, which may not require the
original media. It's described here:

Description of Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 3:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;832671

If you get the CD drive working (or can borrow one), copy it to your hard
drive and re-run setup from there. Then you'll always have access to the
source. FWIW, in Office 2003, they have mitigated this issue, but that
doesn't help you a lot now, I realize...
