Service Pack 3 Problem

Hi,

Recently downloaded Office XP Service Pack 3. If I recall, the web page
which contained the Service Pack checked for any update I needed and
downloaded Service Pack 3. Usually I have this done automatically but this
time I actively searched for the update. I now cannot install the Service
Pack. Some installation "work" gets done, but when things finish I get a
message telliing me Service Pack 3 was not installed. Further research
indicates that the problem may be that Service Pack 3 is for a later version
of Office. I have the 2002 version. I'm not sure about this point but I
thought I'd mention this. How do I either get this pack installed or remove
it from my computer? On another note, if the problem is that this service
pack is not for my version of Office, how did this service pack get
downloaded onto my computer if the web page checked my computer to see what
downloads I needed and downloaded it?

Thanks in advance

Hi, MEDES,

The Office Updater looks at the information in the Control Panel's
Add/Remove Programs applet to see what software is installed. You may have a
later version of some Office component installed, which is what's being
automatically detected. I would make sure that I downloaded Office XP
Service Pack 3 and not Office 2003 SP3, which was just released. You can
browse to it and download it yourself.

Thanks for the reply. I checked and I have downloaded Office XP Service
Pack3. One possible reason for my problem i now realize may be that the
computer no longer recognizes the fact that I have Excel installed. If I
click a saved excel file or the Excel shortcut on the Start menu, the
program begns the installation process and gives me a prompt to insert the
Office CD. I never deleted Excel and I have been using a shortcut I found in
the Office folder. I still get a prompt for the CD but I can override that.
People at the Excel board tried to fix the problem but could not and
suggested I do a compete delete and reinstall. I have not had time to do
that. If I can get any suggestions as to how I can get the computer to
reconize that I still have Excel, that may solve my problem. Perhaps the
service pack is looking for Excel and can't find it. It's there. I use it.
But not in the usual manner.

Thanks
