Service Pack 3 screw up

R

raindawg

I inadvertantly started installing service pack 3 on my home computer before
I realized it was an office XP professional update. I have XP home edition
on my computer. I cancelled the install but now I can't get into my excel
files without it asking for the office xp professional with front page disc
which of course I don't have. I can still access word, and powerpoint with
no problems.

Is there anyway to undue this and get my excel access back?

hi Raindawg,

The use by Microsoft of 'XP' (new eXPerience) fin the name for both the Windows and Office product lines was seen as 'cute' or
'clever' by MS marketing but confused quite a few people :) Both product families also have a 'professional edition' sort of
compounded the confusion.

There isn't any relationship between the edition of MS Office XP you can have and the version of MS Windows XP that you can have.
Any edition of MS Office XP (Standard, Student & Teachers, Small Business, Professional) can run on any version of MS Windows XP
product family (Home or Professional).

"The MS Office XP Professional with Front Page" was a non-retail edition (corporate/volume licensed), basically the MS Installer
expects to have access to the original product CD (or installation source on a network drive for example) originally used to repair
or reinstall the Office products.

The system restore did the trick. I'm somewhat of a novice and had never
used the system restore before.

Thanks for the help

Then... having done all of that...

You /should/ install Office XP Service Pack 3 to your Windows XP Home system
with Office XP installed.

However, in order to install the service pack, you -will- need the original
installation CD.
