"set language" in Word 2007?

B

Barbara White

I'm using Word 2007 on Windows XP.

One of the things that I like to do in a doc before I finish it is to
select all, set the language to U.S. English, and re-run the spell check.

I can't figure out how to set the language for all styles in my 2007 doc.

I'm in Review > Spelling, but I can't see anything relevant there for
languages. (I see that "English" is listed in the "Research" drop-down
area, but I don't think that does what I want.)

I've right-clicked in every area of the Review > Spelling group, but I
can't see anything for setting the language for everything in the
document. (Yet when I run the spell check, it indicates that some text
might have been skipped because it was set to "Do not check spelling or
grammar.")

I've looked at Office > Word Options > Proofing, but can't see anything
there that relates to language settings.

I've also referred to Microsoft's mapping Excel file (which maps XP
command locations to locations in Word 2007) and while it indicates that
XP's Tools > Language (Set Language) is mapped to "Review > Proofing >
Set Language" I can't find it.

Yar.

So, is there a Word 2007 equivalent to XP's Tools > Language > Set Language?

Thanks.
Barbara

Hi,
I had the same problem. The only way I found to mark text with a specific
language was to show the "Review" tab, and click the "Define Language" icon
located to the right of the "Thesaurus" command in the "Proofing" group on
the left.

Hope this helps.

The command mapping file is exactly correct:
XP's Tools > Language (Set Language) is mapped to "Review > Proofing >
Set Language"

but perhaps you misunderstood the shorthand that's being used there.
"Review" means the Review tab. "Proofing" refers to the group of
buttons at the left end of the Review ribbon, which has the label
"Proofing" underneath it. The "Set Language" refers to the button in
that group (the second one in the third column).

It isn't _in_ any other dialog, it's a separate button by itself.

Like the similar command in previous versions, it applies its settings
to whatever text is selected at the time, so you still need to "select
all" first to apply to everything.

I was (and am) clicking the Review tab--it's nestled in between
"Mailings" and "View" (on what I think is the Ribbon--I still don't have
the 2007 terminology down).

On that Review tab is the Proofing group--it's in the far-left area and
says "Proofing" underneath. In that area are two columns of buttons: In
the first column is a big icon-like button labeled "Spelling & Grammar"
and next to it, these buttons appear in the second column: "Research",
"Thesaurus", and "Translate".

You must be right in that I must be in the wrong area...? I've clicked
every tab in the ribbon and can't see anything else that has a
"Proofing" group. Where am I? :)

There aren't any buttons that appear to the right of "Thesaurus" in the
Proofing group.

Honestly, in my Proofing group, right next to "Thesaurus" is a vertical
grey divider and then there is a column of buttons but they're part of
the next group (the "Comments" group).

I wonder if this is because I'm using Word 2007 on Windows XP. Maybe the
interface is slightly different? Or maybe I reset what appears in that
group? I can't see how I could have done that, though. (I looked into
that before I posted here.)

:-?

Thanks to Jay for the answer! My screen resolution needed to be
adjusted. Once I did that, extra columns of buttons magically appeared.
Fantastic! Thanks, everyone, for the help and thanks to Jay in
particular! I was starting to think that I was losing it. :)

You are in the right "place" ("group").
You have an icon to the right of "Thesaurus". It shows a picture of the
earth associated to an open book.
Click on it.
Have a look at this screen capture:
