set numbering of aut-numbered headers with multiple files

Hello,

I have a project that has multiple chapters. Each chapter is stored in
a seperate file. I use the numbered headings extensively for numbering
the chapters, sections, and subsections. For example, here's what
chapter 4's headings might look like:

Chapter 4: heading 1
4.1: heading 2
4.1.1: heading 3

The chapters are consecutively numbered. I've set "heading 1" to start
numbering at "1" in chapter 1, set "heading 1" to start numbering at
"2" in chapter 2, etc.

What I want to do is to put all of my styles in a single template, and
set the template to auto-update the documents, so that when I make a
change to the template, all of the documents are updated. The purpose
for this is so that I can change my styles in one place, rather than
having to modify them in each document.

I was able to copy my styles to a new template, and set the template
option to "automatically update document styles". This causes the
template to update the document whenever I open it. This is exactly
what I want.

However, there is a problem. Since the "heading 1" style is in the
template, it overwrites the "heading 1" style in the document. This
resets the auto-numbering in the document to match what was in the
template. Which means that each chapter gets the name numbers, rather
than being consecutively numbered.

Is there a fix for this? Some way to force the auto-numbering to start
where I want in each document and still be able to have all of the
heading styles in one template?

Thanks,
Scott

The purpose of "Automatically update document styles" (in
Tools>Templates and Add-Ins) is to keep formatting in sync with the
attached template; this includes restart options for style-based
numbering. If you can't combine all of your documents to a single file
(which is probably the best solution), you'll have to un-check the
"Automatically update document styles" option.
