Set styles for Headings 1-9 coherently - How to?

R

Richard

Hi,

I'm running Office 2003. The styles for my Heading? look like this:

Heading1: Arial 16pt bold
Heading2: Arial 14pt bold italic
Heading3: Arial 13pt bold
Heading4: Times N.R.14pt bold
Heading5: Times N.R.13pt bold italic
Heading6: Times N.R.11pt bold
etc.

To my mind, this is somewhat haphazard when all of them are used in a
document.

What is the most expeditious way to change them to something more
orderly IMHO, let's say:

Heading1: Arial 16pt bold
Heading2: Times N.R.15pt bold italic
Heading3: Arial 14pt bold
Heading4: Times N.R.13pt bold italic
Heading5: Arial N.R.12pt bold
Heading6: Times N.R.11pt bold italic
etc.

for the current and all future documents on my machine?

TIA,
Richard

I'm not sure if you are asking how to modify the Heading styles or
distributed the modified styles to previously created documents, or both.

To modify the styles:
- Create a new template or if you want to redefine them in Normal.dot,
creating a new document based on your Normal template
- Go to Format/Styles. This should display the Styles and Formatting task
pane.
- Click the arrow next to Heading 1, then click Modify
- Make your style changes
- If using a blank document, select the option, New Documents Based on This
Template (this may read differently - I'm going on memory here.)
- Repeat last three steps for the other Heading styles

To distribute the styles to previously created documents there are a couple
methods you can use:

1. Organizer:
- Go to Tools/Templates and Add-ins and click Organizer
- Close the Normal.dot (if you have them defined in another
document/template)
- Open the document/template with your preferred styles
- Select the Heading styles, copy them to your document

2. Use the Automatically Update Document Styles option
- Create a template for you newly defined styles (or if they are defined in
Normal.dot this isn't necessary)
- Go to Tools/Templates and Add-ins
- Attach the template with the modified styles (if necessary)
- Select the Automatically Update Document Styles option

Then for new documents, use your modified template.

Great guidance. Thanks.

I just came up with another issue, but I'll post under a new thread.

Best wishes,
Richard
