set up an email service for Outlook 1997

hello all.
How do I set up an email service for MS Outlook 97? I know this is really
old, but this is what I have. My email works fine in Outlook Express, but I
would like to try Outlook and if it works well for me, possibly upgrade to
one of the newer Outlooks. Right now, though, I cannot figure out how to
get my Outlook program to connect to the internet and read my email. For
info purposes, I am using Win Xp sp2, and have NIS as a filter and virsus
protection. Your help is much appreciated.
