Recently purchased a IMAC computer which replaced a PC. My PC utilized
MS Office Basic Edition 2003(have a CD).

My IMAC had a trail MS Office Program which has now run out. I
purchased an MS Office Mac 2004 with Virtual PC for Mac upgrade and
downloaded the Office Mac 2004 software and number one Virtual PC for
Mac disc. The virtual Pc for Mac disc 2 and the virtual Pc for Mac
version 7 with windows XP Professional will not download.

Additionally, when I try to operate the Office Mac 2004 software I am
asked to provide Office 2001 software to update. It willl not accept
my Ms Office Basic Edition 2003 CD or recognize my trail Office
software. I don't know what I should do? I was under the impression
that an upgrade was all that I needed to purchase, I have tried to
find an Office 2001 that I could download from MS for
Mac without success. Does anyone in the group no what I should do?

Yes: If you have the latest Intel-processor iMac, Virtual PC will not run
on it. Return that disc to the store and get a refund. You need Microsoft
Office Standard.

You also need a copy of Windows. You can't use the one that comes with
Virtual PC, it won't load (you can force it, but don't bother, get your
money back and buy a standard copy, it's cheaper...)

Then you need to download Bootcamp from Apple and install it, then Windows,
then Office 2003.

Alternatively, I and most people on Intel-based Macs use "Parallels", a
program that enables you to run Mac OS and Windows programs simultaneously.
If you wish to do that, it's a little more expensive but a lot more
convenient.

If you want to do this, you also need a copy of Parallels in addition to all
the above. Google for Parallels: you can download it for $79.00. And if
you wish to run OS X and Windows side-by-side, you also need at least one
gigabyte of RAM. Better to have two GB if you are going to run Windows
often. So while you're in the shop, take the iMac and get them to snap in a
memory upgrade :)

Hope this helps

One *small* point to add to John's list :

Office 2003 will not serve as the basis for an *upgrade* to Office 2004 in
the first place - It isn't an "upgrade" you're making, it's a lateral
switch. IOW, you can only upgrade from one Mac version to the next or from
one Windows version to the next, not cross-platform. If you want to use the
Mac version of Office you'll need to buy the Full Retail Package (Standard
version , or - if you qualify - Student/Teacher... as John points out, you
have no need for Professional. The only thing it offers that the others
don't is VPC7, which you can't use).
