Setting default page layout for "new page" in PPT

For PowerPoint2002 under XP I can't seem to figure out
how to get a new page to automatically be blank without
having to go through the extra steps of selecting it from
the list in the slide layout box. In PowerPoint2000
under NT it would select as default whatever you had
selected previously but not so in the newer version.
Anybody out there figure this one out? Or is it just the
way the program was written?
