Setting default page size

Norm

I can't for the life of me find out how to get Word to stop setting my default
page size to US letter. (needs to be A4) This is causing no end of grief with a
particular doc (a locked, pre-formatted application I need to fill out). How
do you change the default fonts and page sizes in Word. Nothing in internal
help nor online. Very frustrating.

If the problem is with a particular doc, I think you need to change the page
size for it individually--go to File | Page Setup while in the doc. It
should hold the setting, once you have made it, I believe.

To change the default formatting of new documents: from the File | Page
Setup dialog, there is a default button you can click to save the changes
(ditto for the Font dialog and the Format | Document dialog). If those
aren't holding, find your Normal template and make the changes in it
directly (should be in Apps:Office:Templates). All new documents are
generated based on the Normal template.

In Preferences, Save tab, click "prompt to save Normal template" so that in
case some add-in is changing your settings, you will be notified in the
future.

Hello Norm,

Try this: choose "Page Setup" then select A4. Then choose "Microsoft Word"
from the settings pop-up and click on the "Default" button.

* A suggestion: If you post a question, keep re-visiting the newsgroup for
several days after the first response comes in. Sometimes it takes a few
responses before the best or complete solution is proposed; sometimes you'll
be asked for further information so that a better answer can be provided.
Good tips about getting the best out of posting are at

* If anyone is still reading down this far, here's a question: is it time
for you to back up your Normal template and all your Word settings files?
(This should be on a medium other than the internal hard drive and, if you
also want to protect against theft and fire, stored in a different
building.)
