Setting Default template in Word 2007

I am having trouble setting my own default template in Word 2007.

I have my normal.dot from Word 2003 containing customized styles. I need
this to appear when I click on new Blank document in 2007 and also to add
these styles to the Quick Styles box on the ribbon.

I have tried renaming it as Normal.dotm under 'C:\Documents and
Settings\user\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates' but when I open Word, it
appears to overwrite it with it's own standard copy.
