setting font defaults

Bao Pu

Hi,

I work with documents that are mostly written in English but include
some
Chinese characters as well. The English font I like is MS Reference
Serif and
the Chinese font I like is Simsun.

Now, the MS serif font seems to be the default because all new
documents I
open are set to MS serif. I seem to recall having Simsun as my
default
Chinese font whenever I copy-and-pasted some Chinese characters in
the
document they would appear in Simsun font. But now something has
changed and
different Chinese fonts (e.g., MS Mincho, PMing LiU) are the fonts
used when
I paste some characters into the document.

Can anyone tell me why? Can anyone tell me how to set the defaults for
both
English and Chinese fonts?

I'm using Microsoft Word 2002 SP3 that came with Microsoft Works Suite
2006.

thanks in advance,
Bao Pu

I answered an almost identically worded question a few days ago -- was
that yours? The Format Style: Font window has an area for "complex
script" where you set that default (assuming that Chinese or Japanese
or Arabic or etc. has been installed in your computer).

Yes, that was my post. Your answer didn't help, unfortunately. I click
FORMAT, then STYLES AND FORMATTING... and then a panel appears on the
right. If I click on "New Style" I can get to fonts, but nothing like
what you mention appears. We must have different versions.

Hi Bao Pu,

Assuming that in the Windows Control Panel, Regional and Language Settings your system is already enabled for Chinese, then in
Start=>Programs=>Microsoft Office=>Microsoft Office Tools
see if any of the Chinese (or other language choices) is included (shutdown all Office apps before doing so). After adding the
language restart Word and check the Font dialog again to see if you have additional choices.

For the fonts, if you do not see those particular fonts listed in the Font applet in the Windows control panel you may be able to
install them from the shared features choice for Microsoft Word 2002 in the Windows control panel.

Thanks Bob,

I've got my font dialog to show "Asian Fonts" now. I went to control
panel > regional and language settings > keyboards and languages and
then clicked "change keyboards." I then added Chinese. That's it. So I
opened a new document, and opened the font dialog and set both English
and Asain fonts and hit "default."

Thanks :)
