Setting Heading 1 Outline Numbering Style to Specific Number in Doc

Hi everybody. I am not sure if this particular issue has been discussed --
there seems to be an enormous amount of info on numbering problems, but
right now I can't seem to find the answer to my specific problem.

In a nutshell, I want to know if there's any way to force Word to retain
numbering overrides in a style attached to outline numbering.

I have defined Heading 1 to include an outline numbering scheme such that
the word "Chapter" plus some number always precedes Heading 1 text. Next, I
created several books with each chapter a separate document, Chapter 1 is
the first doc, Chapter 2 is the second doc, and so forth. To cause the
correct chapter number to appear, I override the starting number under
Bullets & Numbering/Outline numbering styles, manually setting the correct
chapter number at the start of each doc. Then I print the document -- all
looks good -- but when the doc is saved and then re-opened, Word does not
retain my overrides but instead reverts back to the number set with the
Heading 1 style.

How can I force Word to keep the Heading 1 number that I set in the document
without reverting back to the number specified in the Heading 1 style? (And
by the way, autmatic updates is not turned on.)

I've thought about possibly creating separate templates for each chapter, so
I can set the number in Heading 1 style in each template (a Chapter 1
template, a Chapter 2 template, etc.) or else embedding a sequence field in
the doc and set it myself with a switch or something like that...

In any case, both possibilities are not very appealing. Are there any other
alternatives?

Thanks,

Kim Finleyson

Hi Kim,

The first thing to check is whether you have "Automatic update" for styles
activated in Tools/Templates and Addins? If you have, turn that off and the
number should stop reverting.

If you don't want to turn it off, then you might want to store the value as a
document property or variable, then have a macro reset the value. You might
have to do some testing until you find out how to get the macro to execute
AFTER the style update has been performed. Maybe loop, testing the value,
until it goes to "1", then resetting.

Nevermind, figured out the answer to the below. However question to anybody
that may be reading this: Can anybody send me a copy of the article
"CureListNumbering" -- I'd like to read it, but the link on word.mvps.org
doesn't seem to be working.
(http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/CureListNumbering.htm) If anybody has a
copy, please reply with new link. Thanks.

Cindy--For some reason I am just now seeing your post (it's 9:48 EST)...The
macro that you suggested is exactly what I want to do. Thanks!
