setting parameters for worksheet

I'm trying to set up an Excel worksheet and cannot figure out how to set the number of columns and rows that I need. I've highlighted the (11,000+) columns that I don't need and clicked Edit & Delete, but nothing happens. What else can I do? Help!

The number of columns & rows is fixed - those numbers cannot be increased or
decreased. "Deleted" columns or rows are simply moved out to the respective
edge & the gap closes up. The simplest [and perhaps most common] approach is
to just use those you need & ignore the rest... They don't print unless you
choose to do so nor do they increase the size of the file

There are methods of hiding or disguising the additional columns & rows but
unless you're designing some sort of form (invoice, calendar, planner, etc.)
it's probably more trouble than it's worth.
