Hi,

I'm trying to set password for my OneNote section, all went well with the
protection BUT after I unlock the section ALL of my links are no longer
working..

The links could not be restored event after I removed the password..

Qs to experts..
What did I do wrong??
Is this a OneNote feature, limitation, or bug??
How do I recover lost links?

BTW - the link feature in OneNote is fantastic...

Thanks,

T.

Can you describe the steps to recreate what you're talking about? If
you're pasting a link to a PW-protected Section, the link should still
work, but you would have to type the password each time you want to access
that Section. If you're pasting a link to a non-protected Section inside
of a protected Section, there's no reason why the password should
interfere.

Hi Erik,

My section already contains links before I set password and they're all
working OK..
Here are the steps..
1. Set password using File | Password.. Then set password to that section,
followed by Lock All action which the section then was locked.
2. Switched to another section ans switched back to locked section, it asked
me to unlock using password which I did.
3. Section was unlocked, all the links in the section were broken..

I didn't paste anything in the section, just set password and then unlock
the section.
The only way I can restore links is removed password from the section and
restore backup file.

Don't know if this is what you were asking..

I can’t reproduce that behavior. I created a test section, put in links to
both web and internal (OneNote) content. Tested the links, they worked
fine. I password protected the section using File | Password Protect...
locked it.

Switched to a different section (different notebook even), then back to the
newly protected section. Entered the password as required. Tested the
links. They all still work for me. What build of OneNote are you using?
Do you have SP1 installed?

Ah..

I went back to try all the links scenarios I can think of. Before and after
installing SP1. The ONLY scenario that links were broken is the first time
the section is set with password and unlock it and the only links that were
broken are the links within a page..

Here are steps to reproduce..

1. create new section with a new page
2. create a few links within this page
3. set password
4. lock section
5. unlock section
6. links broke
7. redo links
8. lock and unlock section this time links work OK..

It's not as painful if your section doesn't have a lot of within page links
but it is if yours does. So you have to redo those links again once..

Since my existing sections have a lot of within page links, I have to redo
all of them..

Thanks for your input..

The links are to other content on the same page BUT it's unlocked. That how I
found out the links broke after I unlock it the first time..

Thanks.

Yes, the links are to other content on the same page BUT the page is
unlocked.. That's how I found out that the links broke after I unlock the
page the first time after I set password.. As I said, after I fixed the
broken links, they are working after that..

Thanks.
