Setting tabs and the default tab stops

I am working a doc with the incremental tab stop stops set at 0.5 pi. However, for example, a para
will have a tab at an odd value like 10.83 pi. Moving the tab (or indents) will not make it lock to
an incremental 0.5 pi position. As 10.83 is close to 0.9 in, I suspect that the doc was set for
inches in the horizontal rule even though it currently shows picas. How do I get to behave so I can
drag the tab to a pica distance? HELP isn't helping.

Hi Tony:

You can't. It's a design bug in Word.

You're quite correct: the ruler is set up for Imperial measurements: every
one eighth of an inch, I think. There is no way to alter the grid spacing.

You need to set your tabs explicitly if you want to set measures other than
that. I never use the ruler for setting tabs for that very reason. Use the
dialog and you'll get them where you want them :)

Cheers

Hi Tony -

Try holding the Option key while adjusting the tab settings on the Ruler...
I believe you'll appreciate what you find:) Also, % of Zoom makes a
difference in the precision available - the higher the better.

Thanks John, but curious. This doc was drafted in 1999 with tabs/indents set at 0.5 pi increments
that "behaved" themselves. Is this bug a new one for Word (Office 2004 version 11.3.5).

Alternatively to my previous post - if it won't interfere with other
requirements...

Turn on the Drawing Toolbar [of all things - go figure], click the Draw
button, select Grid and set the horizontal value to .01 pt... then you won't
need to use the Option key.

That was Bob :)

I'm John, the one who forgot that trick :)

Thanks John, that's an excellent trick.
