Setting the Language does not hold

Installed software: Windows XP Home SP2, MS Works Suite2000 with Word 2000.

I am in the process of transferring Word 2000 onto a new computer. After
the installation is complete, everything appears normal with the exception
of setting the Tools/Language/Set Language. When I open the Set Language I
see English (U.S.) and French (Belgium) as the two optional languages. Then
I scroll down to English (U.K.) and click on the Default button. Now I have
three optional languages, selecting English (U.K.) and clicking the Default
button I get the message that this will affect all new documents based on
the Normal Template. However, after closing and re-opening Word, when I
open a new document I only have the original two languages available. As
this procedure used to work on my old computer I have un-installed &
re-installed Word but the symptoms remain the same.

Can someone please advise me how to make English (U.K.) the default
language?

Hi Jay,
Thank you for your advice. I performed a number of actions and am not sure
exactly which action cleared the trouble.
First, I went to Regional Languages/Languages/Details and set the three
languages I require English /French/Dutch with a French Keyboard. Next, I
opened
Word/Tools/Language/Set Language where I unchecked "Detect language
automatically" and selected the three languages I require. Then I set the
English (U.K) option to be the default. I could not see how to remove the
English (U.S) option, but that is not important. Now my Word problem is
resolved.
