Setting the value for an empty date

I noticed that a date property field with uninitialized value (so that the word 'none' is displayed into the textbox) contains actually the date #4501-01-01#. This is the only value that, once set, makes the word 'none' appear into the textbox
But this is not officially documented. So is there an official way to achieve the same result ?
