Setting TWO default languages on 1 document

T

TXBYTE1

In WORD can you have 2 different default languages - like say you want to
make 2 columns and the left column is in Spanish and the right one is in
French. How can I set it up so that 1/2 of my document is not always shown
as misspelled?

I would love to have spell check on for 2 different languages if they are
separated by section breaks but I can't seem to figure out how to do this.

Any ideas?

Hello,

Just highlight the part you want in Spanish, and select Tools | Language |
Set Language..., then select the appropriate Spanish. This should only change
the langue for the selection.

I am assuming Office 2003 here. In 2007, 'Set Language' is on the Review tab.

Although you can just select the text and apply the language, a more
satisfactory approach is to define two separate sets of styles, one with the
language defined as French and one with Spanish. Then use the appropriate
styles in the appropriate columns. Needless to say, this will not work if
you need to use the built-in heading styles, as you can have only one
version of each.

Suzanne,

Thanks for the suggested improvement. I was aiming for simplicity, but using
styles is probably better.

If the OP uses a table to create "parallel columns," just selecting the
columns would, in general, work well. The only caveat is that if
Ctrl+Spacebar is used to reset font formatting (or Ctrl+Q for a paragraph),
it will revert to the default language for the style.
