Setting up ecommerce - What is a Secure Server ?

T

tmb

If a website is hosted on a Microsoft IIS server...

What makes if a 'secure server' for ecommerce?

- Is it a protected directory/folder on the server for the shopping cart and
credit card info... along with the shopping cart software encription
scheme...

- Or must it be on a seperate machine that is setup as a secure server?

I'm wondering if I will need to ask my ISP for anything extra if I put
ecommerce on my site.

(Assuming I already have my Merchant Account, Gateway, SSL certificate and
Shopping Cart software package.)

thanks for any help

To be secure a SSL certificate will need to be installed on the server by the web host, so you need
to contact them, and they are the best source for server related questions. The SSL should be
applied to your entire domain, then to bring pages up in SSL mode you would create absolute URLs
that begin with https://

Also, the route to your secure pages can be different depending on your
host, so definitely check with them on the issue of how to implement your
secure server.
I had one host that required all secure pages and files in a separate folder
from the regular domain pages, every host since has only required a secure
path to the files.
