Setting up new exchange account

Hi there,

I'm trying to set up a new exchange account and so far not been
able...Current set up is:

Vista Ultimate
Microsoft Office Outlook 2007
VPN client: Cisco 5.0.01.0600

When using the autodiscover feature, I get a "An encrypted connection
to your mail server is not available..."
Strange thing is that I can see encryption beeing used on the VPN
client.

When using the manual feature it displays "The action cannot be
completed. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable.
Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action".

BTW, I'm able to ping the exchange server when I'm connected to the
VPN.

Thank you,
Maxi.

Couple of thoughts that may help you....

1) Can you ping the server by NetBIOS name and fully qualified domain name?
(e.g. NetBIOS name is the short name of the server. For example, if the
exchange server is named exchange01 and the domain is contoso.com, then the
NetBIOS name is exchange01 and the fully qualified name is
exchange01.contoso.com.)

2) When creating the mail profile in outlook manually, you might have to go
into the advanced section/security tab and change outlook authentication to
NTLM. The reason why is that your Cisco client might be dropping the
kerberos authentication attempts.

PS - Since you didn't mention what version of Exchange you are connecting
to, #1 will require a minimum of you checking DNS/WINS resolution to the
Exchange server as well as the domain controller(s) that are global catalog
servers.

Thanks Neo.

1- I am able to ping the server both by NetBIOS and fully qualified
domain names.
2- I changed security settings to NTLM, but still no success

PS: not sure about the Exchange version, but I might be able to check
and come later on that.

Is there anything else I could try? Thanks again,
M.

More info on this topic.

- I was able to telnet the MS Exchange server and got: Microsoft ESMTP
mail server version 6.0.3790.3959
- I am able to read mail through OWA (Outlook Web Access).

Still no success in getting the account added to MS Office Outlook.
Thanks,
M.

Out of curiosity, do you have Office 2007 Service Pack 2 installed?

If yes to the question above, can you ask the guys that run the Exchange
servers if they use the "No RFR Service" registry key on them.

Note: There was a code change in Office 2007 SP2 that breaks the ability to
create outlook mail profiles if the No RFR Service registry key is used on
the Exchange servers.
