Setting up Standard and custom calendar

Stefan Robert

Hi everyone,

I checked the mvps.org FAQ and read a couple of posts about this and
since english is not my first language, I would like to know if I
understood correctly how to use the feature of creating custom
calendars.

When I create a New Project, I assign this project a "Standard
Calendar" that fits every ressources. (meaning, everything related to
the company itself)

Then, I create a custom calendar for every ressources regarding their
special requirements or location in the world.

For example, if my company is in Canada, my project standard calendar
should contain all related events in my company that will affect my
project (company events, national holidays). Then, if my ressources
are canadians, I can assign them the standard calendar.

For my USA ressources, I would need to create a custom calendar and
assign it to them. Then these resources would follow the US calendar,
right?

Then, since I base my project on Canadian National holidays, will my
project prevent US resources to be assigned during the canadian
thanksgiving days (since it is different in Canada)?

Hi Stefan

the "project calendar" which is selected by choosing project / project
information and is customised by choosing tools / change working time is by
default assigned to all tasks and all resources IF you chose the "Standard"
one rather than creating a new one and selecting that as the project
calendar.

SO, if you chose Standard under project / project information and put the
canadian public holidays in it under tools / change working time then, by
default, all tasks and resources will be assigned this calendar and no work
will be scheduled on the canadian public holidays.

Then if you create another calendar with the US public holidays and assign
this to the US resources, then the resources will work according to this
calendar ... so if the public holidays are different they will only get the
US ones not the Canadian ones UNLESS, you select all tasks, go to task
information, and on the advanced tab, under calendar choose Standard. Then
no work will be done on the canadian holidays (from the standard calendar)
and no work will be done on the US holidays (for those resources who have
the US calendar applied).

A quick way to test this is:
create a new project using the standard calendar as the project calendar.
enter two 5d tasks starting next monday
edit the standard calendar to show the tuesday as a non-working day
(notice both tasks adjust the same)
create two resources (R1 & R2 ... both with the standard calendar)
now assign R1 to the first task
assign R2 to the second task
now create a new calendar with next thursday as a non-working day and the
tuesday as a working day
assign this new calendar to R2 ... have a look at the resource usage view
notice that R2 now works on the tuesday, but doesn't on the thursday
now double click on the second task, go to the advanced tab, choose standard
as the calendar and now notice that R2 has both the tuesday and the thursday
off.

Hope this helps
cheers
