Setting up User without Windows Authentication

dt @ dsc

I recently upgraded to Server 2007 and I am now trying to add a new user that
will not be using Windows Authentication. We use these resources as
placeholders and in Server 2003 I was able to mark them as forms
authenticated and the user was added. Now when I try to do the same thing, I
get a message stating I need to provide user name
(MembershipProvider:UserAccount) and I'm unclear of what it is asking me to
do. Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks, dt

Dt,

I am not sure why you get this error. But on a different note you can use
generic resources for placeholders.

Thanks Gagan. In 2003 we used the forms authentication for all of our
generic resources. If I were now to change all of these resources to the new
generic designation would it have a negative effect on the projects that
contain the resources already? I would much prefer make use of the the
generic label, but am reluctant to forge ahead unless I know the change would
be relatively transparent. I appreciate your help. dt

I think you are getting confused between generic resource and real resource
with non windows authentication. See this link for clear understanding on
resource types.

Now in 2003 there was no forms authentication it was called project server
authentication, it is basically meant for real resources (not generic) who
cannot be given NT authentication e.g. contractors working remotely.

In 2007 there is Forms authentication which is replacement for Project
server authentication but needs special deployment steps. Below is a link for
that.

Right now you have to find whether do you need a generic resource which in
reality is a role like Developer, DBA etc or a real resource with non Windows
authenctiation.
